What is a computer monitor and why it is important?

Computer monitors are in fact a visual display equipment (in technical terms it is called Visual Display Unit) that shows videos and motionless graphic images which are produced by a computer, game consoles or other electronic equipment. Computer monitors are extremely important piece to modern computers, without this piece your computer is totally unusable. Computer monitors are available in various sizes and technologies. It depends on the model and manufacturer. The technology development of the computer monitor goes hand in hand with the computer’s processing power advancement itself. This includes circuitry designs, manufacturing techniques, materials used and overall appearance. Bear with me for a little bit, cause i’m just going to talk about the brief history of computer monitors, starting from its beginnings, its evolution to how it is today, and what concepts and designs could there be for the future.

a visual display unit showing time, temperature and other info you need to know inside a case tower.

How it all started.

Computer monitors in the very beginning are totaly different from what we have today. In the beginning they are basically used so that human beings are able to see what is happening inside a computer logically. It is for monitoring what a user entered and what response the computer is going to give back. One of the very first digital displays are simply blinking indicator lights. It shows the user light combination codes of what the computer is processing and doing. Another early type of monitoring is by using a punch card. Punched hole patterns and codes on a card is how a user can view information of what the computer is up to or what it just did. A more interactive and efficient way was the teletype typewriters/printers as monitors. Teletype was used to display the processes of a computer continously on a printedout paper which includes the users input and the computers response. Yes, this are the very first computer monitors. During those days computers are huge and occupies the size of a large room and are used to decode encrypted messages mostly for military purposes.

indicator lights display console

ASR33 (Automatic Send-Receive) TeleType 500

The Modern Computer Monitor!

The display monitor type that is similar to what we have today started from what you called a glass teletype or dumb terminal. This terminals uses CRT monitors.

Zenith Z-19 Dumb Terminal

The CRT computer monitor. CRT stands for Cathode Ray Tube. This is one big vacuum tube assembly which includes the main computer screen on one end. It uses 3 electron guns, one for colour red, green and blue. How it works is it uses the electron gun to shoot electrons (all this happening inside the vacuum tube) to the front flourescent screen coming from behind which creates the images and graphics that we all see.
Advantage and Disadvantages: bulky, images not clear, emit electromagnetic radiation, consume more power

17 inch LG CRT Monitor

The LCD computer monitor. LCD stands for Liquid Crystal Display. An LCD screen has various layers, the backlight, the polarizing films, positive electrode which acts as mask of coloured pixels, the liquid crystal solution layer, the polarizing sheet of glass. Through application of precise electrical charges to the liquid crystal solution, the electronic programming can make the Liquid Crystal(LC) behave like microscopic shutters, it will close and open reacting to the voltage variations applied, and allowing levels of light go thru the coloured individual pixels which lights up the display screen, and enabling images to be seen.
Advantage and Disadvantages: delicate screen, consumes more power compare to LED monitors

asus wireless lcd monitor

The LED Computer monitor. LED stands for Light Emitting Diode. An LED screen is a flat panel display similar to an LCD screen but uses different technology. LED uses light-emitting diodes. Every pixel on the screen is composed of tiny LED groups that has red, green and blue LED that lits up to create various colours for that particular pixel, and enables images to be seen.
Advantage and Disadvantages: consumes less power amongst monitors, sharper images compare to LCDs
